MINUTES FROM MEETINGS

PA of PS 144Q
Board Meeting Minutes April 28, 2009

Attendance: Tricia Kampton, Jeanne Kwok, Amy Woo, Kim Ramazan, Rhonda Barrish, Lisa Brody, Sue Izeman, Susan Chin-Louie, Maria Cognata, Nikki O’Sullivan, Christa Treitmeier-Meditz, Kathryn Thome

School kits: Lisa Brody displayed a sample of “School Kits,” based on supply lists from the current school year. Sample kit was $46; the PA could save 7% if contract were signed by Oct. 31, 2009 and an additional 4% if paid by March 2010. The earliest we can consider doing this is for September 2010. It could possibly be a fundraiser depending on what the PA wants to charge per kit.

Parent survey: According to Chancellor’s regulations, the PA must offer a parent survey every 2 years. Amy Woo and Jeanne Kwok will put together a survey. Any suggestions should be forwarded to them. Contents for now include getting feedback on school uniforms, PA meeting times, and school kits.

After-school program: Jeanne Kwok, Maria Cognata, and Joanne Rios held a meeting with Emily Ades to obtain information on PS 196’s after-school program. PS 196 operates its program through “Be Cool After-School,” which takes a 10% administration fee. PS 196 offers a longer and more varied program than what PS 144 offers. We will further look into the specifics of their program and survey the parents as to what their after-school needs are.

In-school fundraising: Maria Cognata reviewed the Chancellor’s Regulations on PA fundraising events that take place in school and may or may not involve children and instructional hours. The PA is limited to 2 in-school fundraisers a year; we must decide which ones we want to do.

It is not a fundraiser, but Holiday Boutique was discussed as possibly making it one while maintaining its “kid-friendliness.” It was suggested that it be combined with the holiday party at the December meeting, including selling raffle baskets, plants, food, drinks.

There are no restrictions on fundraising during non-instructional hours i.e. during lunch, before and after school.

Plant sale: Sale is Thursday, May 7th during lunch and after school, and Friday the 8th, during lunch. We could use parent volunteers on Friday who do not have 5th graders or pre-k students, as the sale will take place during ballroom dance and pre-k field day.

Chair: Officer Long has requested a new chair. The Board voted unanimously to buy him a new chair.

Agendas: Purchasing of agendas for next year will remain the same.

Elections: Sue Izeman volunteered to chair the Nominating Committee. Reva Gluck-Schneider must be given a date for elections by May 1st.

Out to Play: PS 144 is a candidate for a getting a new playground through Out to Play. Queensborough President, Helen Marshall, is our contact regarding this matter. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders will write letters to Ms. Marshall as to why our school deserves a new playground.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
