PARENT ASSOCIATION OF P.S. 144
2009-2010
PA Minutes
PA of PS
144Q
Board
Meeting
January 25,
2010
6:05 p.m.
Haiti
relief and local community support:
The PA will support efforts by the student council to raise
money for Haitians affected by the earthquake. PA can collect
canned food at every PA meeting. Jeanne Kwok will call City
Harvest to find out what their needs are and how food is
collected. There are local pantries that we can help.
LEAP
science residency: Sue
Chin-Louie, Jeanne Kwok and Tricia Kampton will observe LEAP
sessions. One 3rd grade observation was not too
positive; LEAP cancelled its session with 4th grade
last week. We need to find get feedback from teachers. A
survey should be conducted in March.
Stairwell
safety: A 5th
grade girl fell down the stairs last week; children were going
the wrong way on the stairs and she was accidentally knocked
down. An ambulance was called as a precaution; the girl is ok.
The safety committee needs to address issues on the stairs,
running in hallways, etc. A “safety assembly” was recommended.
Membership
drive: A vote was taken
as to do a solicitation letter for fundraising. 15 out of 15
attending Board members voted “yes.” Mrs. Gluck-Schneider has
already asked for money from families to help cover
residencies. PA solicitation letter will go out in March.
Auction is scheduled for April 24th.
Gifted and
talented/pre-k: The
last SLT meeting revealed that there might be space if some
students leave after 5th grade to attend 6th
grade elsewhere. It was discussed as to whether a G&T or pre-k
class could be added if there is room.
Truncation
of 6th grade:
CEC reported that if students stay in 6th grade in
elementary school, their chances are limited in getting into
their first choice middle school. The CEC proposed 3 plans:
A) leave things as they are i.e. schools go k-6; B) schools go
k-5 and students are guaranteed seats in the zoned middle
school; C) schools go k-5 and students may apply to middle
schools in the same manner as applying to high school.
Tupperware
fundraiser: A PS 144
parent and Tupperware representatives approached the PA about
doing a fundraiser. It would be done similar to the pie sale,
with minimal work done on the PA’s part. There was concern
about the price of Tupperware products and whether Tupperware
would use the school as a new client base, even though it said
it would not. Board unanimously voted “no” on the fundraiser.
Internet
program: Lisa Brody
suggested that the PA use a “drop box” in which PA documents can
be stored and the Board has access when needed. For example,
the Chancellor’s Regulations or PA bylaws could be stored in
it. Lisa will get more information on the program.
Meeting
adjourned 7:00 p.m.
