2009-2010 PA Minutes

PA of P.S.144

PS 144Q Parents’ Association General Meeting

October 20, 2009 7:00 p.m.

Co-Presidents Maria Cognata and Trica Kampton welcomed parents.

Community Relations:  JR Nocerino gave the following update:

·         It’s My Park Day, Saturday, Oct. 24th; PS 144 participants can go to Pebblestone Park at 10:00 a.m. to clean up and plant bulbs.

·         Little League registration for baseball and girls’ softball will be Friday, Oct. 30th, 7:00-9:00 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 31st, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  First game is April 8, 2010.

·         Metropolitan Ave. Halloween Parade is Saturday, Oct. 31st, starting 1:00 p.m. at Maspeth Bank.

·         Kidzcare Thanksgiving Senior dinner will be Thanksgiving Day; set-up starts at 11:00 a.m. and Seniors are served 12:00-3:00 p.m.   Volunteers are needed, and spread the word to any Seniors who may be interested.

·         Metropolitan Ave. Campus schools are opening Sept. 2010.  There will be 3 schools:  1) 700-seat IS/HS, for Districts 24 & 28; 2) 1000-seat locally zoned HS; and 3) 200-seat District 75/special needs.  Local zoning will be determined by mid-November.  The schools will not be filled right away; the IS/HS will start with 6th and 7th grades only and the HS will start with just 9th grade, 108 students in each class.  It is estimated that it will take 4 years to fill the school. **(see updated notes on Metro Campus below)

There was a meeting last night at the district office where 7 principals presented their curriculums.  Finalists will be chosen by the end of November.  The next meeting will be in November and will focus on zoning.

Events:  Halloween Party is this Saturday and many more volunteers are needed; money is still being collected for the Fall Fundraiser; coat/clothing drive is Nov. 5th & 6th

Swine Flu:  Tricia Kampton attended the swine flu briefing at Queens Borough Hall last night.  She reported that the Dept. of Health & Mental Hygiene will send out information packets and consent forms next week, for students only.  UPK students in DOE buildings are included in this vaccination program; UPK students in private schools or centers are not included.  Both shots (inactive virus) and nasal mist (active virus) will be offered.  Even with a consent form, no student will be forced to take the vaccine if he or she is uncomfortable or afraid.

Magnet schools:  A representative from the DOE will come to the PA’s November meeting to talk and answer questions about magnet schools.

Playground update:  PS 144 received a total of $500,000 from Melinda Katz and Andrew Hevesi’s offices to re-do the playground.  The large play yard will have its surface repainted and have a play area added on one side of the handball court.  The will be a new small playground installed, including a new surface approved by the school and state.  Work will begin in the Spring; the play are will be shut down piece-meal so it is not 100% unusable all at once.

Meeting adjourned 7:45 p.m.
