PARENT ASSOCIATION OF P.S. 144

2009-2010 PA Minutes

Parents’ Association Board Meeting Minutes
February 22, 2010
6:10 p.m.

Irish Dancers: Parent Coordinator, Siobhan Kyne, asked if the PA wanted to invite back Irish dancers and musicians. Cost would be $500 for both and upper and lower grade presentation. They have performed twice in the past two years. A quorum was not present to hold a vote. General opinion was not to invite them since students had seen them already, and to put funding toward something different.

Teacher supplies: Teachers seem to need more classroom supplies in addition to ones purchased with the $50 from the PA. In particular, classroom libraries need more and better books. The Board will further discuss whether the library fund line in the budget can be put towards classroom supplies.

Suggestion box: It was suggested that a “suggestion box” for the PA be placed in the school foyer.

Community relations: JR Nocerino is working part-time with Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz. He reported that there will be a Metro Campus High School forum on Tuesday, February 23rd, at Russell Sage JHS. He also gave the update that instead of 250 students starting in the new HS, it will be 350.

Middle school options: Co-president Tricia Kampton and VP Jeanne Kwok explained the options for middle school, based on the latest info from the DOE. There are three possibilities, which include A) keeping 6th grade where it is now, K-6th, with option to leave after 5th grade; B) schools are K-5th, and students go to “zoned” middle school; C) schools are K-5th, and all students in Queens are free to apply to any middle school.

Metro Campus: Zoning restrictions were explained for the new middle school and high school.

CEC: The next Community Education Council meeting is Thursday, March 4th.

Meeting was adjourned 7:30 p.m.
