General Meeting Minutes
April 28, 2009

1. Metropolitan Campus:

a. PA Presidents Jeanne Kwok and Maria Cognata, and CEC representative Katherine Thome shared information with the PA related to the new schools being built on Metropolitan Avenue.

Although the information has changed a few times, at the current time

i. The schools are opening in September 2010.

ii. There will be three schools that share some resources – for example the cafeteria, gym, and library

iii. One school will be a 6-12, starting with grades 6,7, and 9. This will be a district 28 school.

iv. The second school will be a 9-12, starting with grade 9 in 2010. This will be a locally zoned, application school; the local area has not been decided

v. The third school will be a District 75 (Special Education) school.

b. Parents at the meeting raised concerns about

i. The range of ages housed in one school building – how will the school handle 11-12 year old sixth graders and 17-18 year old High School seniors

ii. Increased traffic on Metropolitan avenue and the surrounding neighborhood

iii. Zoning for the schools

iv. The process of assigning kids to Russell Sage vs Metro Campus.

c. Jeanne, Maria, and Katherine said that a community survey will be conducted to assess what the community wants and needs. Input can also be shared directly with Katherine, our CEC representative.

d. A task force will be meeting in the next six weeks to begin to hear community concerns.

2. Russell Sage – in a related discussion, Maria shared with the group that Russell Sage has enrolled about 60 students for sixth grade for the 2009-2010 school year.

3. Nominations – Sue Izeman announced that nominations for PA and SLT would begin in the beginning of May, and that elections would occur at the last PA meeting of the year (June 15th)


4. Next PA meeting – the next PA meeting is May 18th, which will be the Halls of Science.
