Board Meeting Minutes May 18, 2009
Attendance: Lisa Brody, Tricia R. Kampton, Susan
Chin-Louie, Nikki O’Sullivan, Sue Izeman, Jeanne Kwok, Amy Woo,
Kathryn Thome, Kathy Reddy, Caroline Walter, Maria Cognata, Kim
Ramazan
Nomination: The Office of Family Engagement and
Advocacy (OFEA) informed the PA that SLT and PA officer
elections may not be held on the same day. PA elections must be
held first; SLT elections may be held 10 days later.
Upon approval from OFEA, this is our proposed schedule for
elections:
• PA nominations are due Thursday, May 21st
• Notice of PA officer nominees is distributed Tuesday, May 26th
• PA elections are held Friday, May 29th
• SLT nominations are due Friday, June 5th
• Notice of SLT nominees is distributed Wednesday, June 10th
• SLT elections are held Monday, June 15th
Class organization 2009-2010: Next year, 6th grade
will be made up of 3 general ed classes and 1 CTT class; class
size is expected to be the same as this year. Any new incoming
6th graders will go to Russell Sage. There will be 5
kindergartens and a CTT in every grade except 4th and 5th
grades. On Tuesday, 5/19, there will be a meeting for parents
who want more information about gifted and talented classes. It
will be a “listening” session with Mrs. Gluck-Schneider and the
SLT.
Memorial Day Parade: Sunday, 5/24; meet at 12:00
in front of Fox’s Funeral Home to march behind the PS 144
banner.
Staff Appreciation: No date for the luncheon has been set, but
it will be either Tuesday, 6/9 or Monday, 6/15 since they are
half days. PA will request 6/9. Sue Izeman and Jeanne Kwok will
co-chair.
Chaperone policy: The class trip chaperone policy
was discussed. There has been an issue where teachers are not
asking parents to go but some of the same parents do chaperone
multiple times. This is not a PA issue and the problem will be
forwarded to Mrs. Gluck-Schneider.
Teachers are not required to go on any trips and have the right
to decline to go on them.
Career Day: It was a very successful event.
Kathryn and Lisa thanked all the volunteers. Everything went
well with the exception of having less 6th graders available to
help escort
presenters to their classrooms. Career Day was the day after the
6th grade Broadway show trip, so many students did not come to
school.
Plant Sale: It raised $1309. Lisa thanked all the
volunteers. She noted that it was a good idea to have the sale
as the same day as Ballroom Dance for 5th grade, as many parents
purchased plants after the performance. They were also reminded
that their purchases will help support the ballroom dance
residency.
5th grade letter: Maria suggested that the PA send
a letter to parents after the ballroom dance residency to
encourage their support of the PA and the residency programs we
pay for. This can be done at the conclusion of all residency
programs. This will be considered for next year.
Picture Day: This agenda item was tabled until
next month’s meeting.
Parent Survey: Jeanne and Amy are nearly done with
the draft of the survey. It will go to the Board and Mrs.
Gluck-Schneider for review.
Book-of-the-Month funds: Liz Schneider has
requested that extra funds from Book-of-the-Month be used for
additional books for the library. The Board will request more
information before voting on this matter.
Meeting adjourned 7:00 pm
