SLT Meeting, January 28, 2008 5:30 PM PS 144 Library

In attendance: Maria Cognata, Reva Gluck-Schneider, Jeanne Kwok, Amy Woo, Kathy Ready, Sue Izeman, Liz Spears, Liz Morrow, Martha Mayorga, Marion Herman, Kathryn Thome

·        Minutes from December’s meeting were approved

·        PS 101

o       Discussion was had regarding an email that was sent to Reva regarding the overcrowding issue at PS 101 and how it affects PS 144

o       PS 144 purposefully has smaller class sizes in the lower grades and uses the Smaller Class Size budget accordingly

o       Reva had to do a SESP (Special Education Projection) and scheduled a Special Education visit to the school. Currently, PS 144 plans on having CTT classes in grades 1,2,3 & 6 and predicts we will need a kindergarten CTT class as well.

o       The overcrowding issue at 144 will not affect the configuration at PS 144

·        Budget Update

o       We are expecting Budget cuts, but not sure to what degree

o       One of the issues is whether or not PS 144 will be able to rollover money from this year to next. Reva will be advised in the following weeks. Regardless, Reva has budget plans in place in either case.

o       Martha Mayorga would like to set up a special SLT budget meeting when budget numbers come in.

·        Halls of Science

o       PS 144 will again hold the Halls of Science

o       Teachers will be encouraged to work on their Hall of Science class room projects as they are working on science and not just during the month of May

o       Halls of Science will take place after the State wide science tests are completed and will coincide with the May PA meeting on May 18th

·        Character Education

o       Maria Cognata asked about the Character education program that was being developed last year i.e. book of the month, character of the month as a school wide initiative. Character Education will be added to the next SLT meeting agenda when Liz Schneider is in attendance.

o       Liz Spears spoke about a program that she used as a student teacher called Second Step, a role playing card game that can be used in the class room to develop and discuss issues such as empathy, bullying, kindness, etc. She will get a sample to show to Reva.

Meeting adjourned at 7:07 PM
