Meeting Minutes

June 24, 2009

1.       Enrichment Cluster s – This was a very successful program this year – children and teachers enjoyed it.  There will be some changes for the new school year  - possibly including additional grades and staff.  Both formal/scheduled and informal planning and collaboration made this a good program for our school.

2.       ELA – the English Language Assessment has been moved  to May.  This will provide a truer “end of year” assessment.  There also may be some changes in format, adding in a writing component.

3.       School calendar – It has been reported in the newspaper that the UFT and the Mayor re-negotiated their contract and teachers will be reporting to school on September 8th (after Labor Day).  Currently, that’s also the day that students return to school.  It is unclear at this time if the children’s schedule will be changed.  If students and teachers return on the same day, there is a loss  of two Professional Development days – the two days teachers are in school before the students – as well as time for teachers to set up their rooms and prepare for the first day of school.

4.       Character Education – At a previous meeting, we had agreed to purchase a curriculum to enhance our teaching of “character development”.  Liz Spears had shared a curriculum.  Mrs. Schneider said that the purchase is in process.

5.       SLT bylaws – SLT members need to review and revise the SLT bylaws.    This will be on the agenda for the first meeting in the 2009-2010 year.  In particular, we want to review election procedures and ways to keep the SLT process transparent.  We need to make sure we are consistent in posting SLT meeting dates in the school, on the PA calendar, and on the PA website; and quicker in posting SLT minutes in the school and on the website.

6.       Membership – The School Leadership Team said “goodbye” to Sue Izeman, Kathy Reddy, and Marion Herman; and wished Mrs. Herman a wonderful retirement.  The SLT welcomed new members Barbara Martin, Lisa Brody, and Tricia Kampton.    For the 2009-2010 school year, Martha Mayorga and Maria Cognata agreed to be co-chairs, Lisa Brody agreed to do minutes, and Liz Schneider agreed to manage the agenda.
